Step-by-Step Guide to Saving Money on Monthly Internet Service
The average cost of internet service in the U.S. is about $65 per month, though prices vary depending on your location.
Step 1:
Call your current internet provider and ask for the retention center. (Many people don’t realize most internet and phone companies have a special department dedicated to keeping existing customers.)
Explain that you’ve received offers from other providers with better rates and that you plan to shop around to lower your monthly bill. Ask what the best monthly rate they can offer is, and make sure all taxes and fees are included so you’re comparing total costs accurately.
Also, request a two-year price lock on the rate—if that’s not possible, try for at least one year. Once you have their quote, move to Step 2.
Step 2:
Go online and request quotes from other reliable internet providers in your area. Tell them you’re considering switching to reduce your monthly expenses and mention the quote your current provider gave you. Ask for their best monthly rate.
Step 3:
Continue calling additional providers, always giving them the best quote you’ve received so far.
Step 4:
Call your current provider again and ask for the retention center. Give them the lowest quote you’ve received and see if they’ll match or beat it.
It might feel like a hassle, but if you save just $20 a month for two years, that’s $480 saved—just on your internet bill!
